Biscuits

You don't need to look any further than this to find that perfectly fluffy and melt in your mouth biscuit. This was my grandmother's recipe, handed down to my mom, and the only one I've ever used.

You can have hot, fluffy homemade biscuits on the table within 30 minutes, start to finish!

Whether you're looking for a biscuit to go with your tea in the morning, to pair with your favourite comfort meal, or for dessert like strawberry shortcake, this is the only recipe you'll need.

Biscuit Recipe (Yields 12-14, depending on the size of your cutter)

Ingredients:

3 cup flour

4 Tbsp. sugar

1 tsp. salt

4 tsp. baking powder

1 cup vegetable shortening

1 egg

Milk (approx. 3/4 cup)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.

  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk all dry ingredients together (flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder).

  3. Add shortening to dry ingredients and mix until well combined. You can do this with a dough blender or your finger tips.

  4. Add the egg to a 1 cup measuring cup, and fill with milk until it measures 1 cup.

  5. Add the egg & milk mixture to the bowl with the rest of the ingredients and mix until just combined, taking care not to over mix.

  6. Pat the mixture into a ball and place onto a lightly floured counter top.

  7. Pat dough until it's approximately 1 1/2 inches high.

  8. Cut with biscuit cutter size of choice or the top of a glass that has been dipped in flour.

  9. Repeat steps 6-8 until there is no more dough to be cut.

  10. Place biscuits onto a non-stick cookie sheet or a parchment covered cookie sheet.

  11. Bake for 18-20 minutes, or until they just start to turn a golden brown.

  12. Place baked biscuits onto a cooling rack.

  13. Enjoy!

Topping options:

For strawberry shortcake, dip the tops of your biscuits into sugar before baking.

Homemade jam.

Nut butters: Peanut or Almond

Egg salad: mix a boiled egg with mayo or miracle whip and a dash of salt & pepper. This is my favourite chopper/mixer for egg salad (and it's awesome for chopping hamburger).
