Mom Guilt: Finding Balance and Self-Compassion
Being a mother is undoubtedly one of life's most rewarding experiences. However, along with the joy, love, and fulfillment that motherhood brings, comes a complex emotion known as "mom guilt." This emotional phenomenon can leave mothers feeling torn between their responsibilities, societal expectations, and their own well-being. In this blog post, we'll delve into the world of mom guilt, its sources, and how to manage it, all while providing some resources that can help you on your journey.
The Origins of Mom Guilt
Society's Unrealistic Expectations: As mothers, we often find ourselves bombarded with images of perfect parenting on social media, in movies, and even in advertisements. These ideals can create a sense of inadequacy, causing us to doubt our own abilities and choices.
Work-Life Balance: Juggling between the demands of a career and family life can lead to feelings of guilt, as mothers often feel like they're not dedicating enough time to either role.
Self-Care Struggles: Taking time for oneself can trigger feelings of guilt, especially when we believe it's taking away from our children's needs.
Managing Mom Guilt: Strategies for Balance
1. Prioritize Self-Compassion: Recognize that perfection is unattainable. Treat yourself with the same kindness you would extend to a friend. I know this one is difficult because I often offer a ton of advice to my friends but not learn from, or use, this advice myself. Here are some self-care essentials:
2. Set Realistic Expectations: Understand that every family's circumstances are unique. Let go of comparisons and focus on what works best for your family. Here are a few Parenting Books that will help you to realize that parenting is not a one shoe fits all:
Book 1 of 14: Stop Overthinking: 23 Techniques to Relieve Stress, Stop Negative Spirals, Declutter Your Mind, and Focus on the Present
3. Quality Over Quantity: Instead of counting the hours spent, focus on the quality of time you spend with your children. Engaging, meaningful interactions can outweigh extended periods of time together. When your kids are talking to you, put your phone down and truly engage & empathize with them.
4. Delegate and Seek Support: Don't be afraid to ask for help. Delegate tasks, and involve your partner or family members. My husband and I are fortunate to have a healthy support system but I'm not oblivious to the fact that many aren't as fortunate as us. However, even if you do have an excellent support system does not mean you take advantage, but it may be the time to start. Especially if you're feeling as though parenting is taking a toll on your mental health.
Nurturing Your Well-Being
1.Self-Care Rituals: Prioritize self-care without guilt. Whether it's reading, taking walks, shopping, or enjoying a warm bath, make time for activities that rejuvenate you. This is a hard one for me but I know the importance of taking care of me first. I'll just leave this here: “Self Care is giving the world the best of you instead of what's left of you."
Get yourself a new, inexpensive bra (stop wearing the same one you've been wearing for 10 years...seriously, stop!)
Sleep in comfort with new sheets and a new pillow
Get yourself some makeup (this is my favourite eyebrow pencil)
Shop for some comfy, chic active wear here
Renew your work wardrobe
2. Mindfulness and Meditation: Practice mindfulness to stay present in the moment and alleviate anxious thoughts. Meditation can help you regain clarity and inner peace.
3. Connect with Fellow Moms: Join local or online support groups to share experiences and gain insights from other mothers who understand your journey. Here are a couple Online Mom Communities I've found:
Remember, mom guilt is a common emotion that many mothers experience, myself included. It's crucial to recognize its sources, challenge unrealistic expectations, and prioritize self-care.
